About iamtheCODE

iamtheCODE is the first African-led global movement to mobilize governments, the private sector, philanthropic foundations, investors and civil society to advance STEAMD (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Design) education. Its goal is to mobilize these groups to invest in future technologies that can drive sustainable development for women and girls in marginalized communities.

We aim to enable 1 million young women and girls’ coders by 2030.

A fundamental pillar of iamtheCODE’s work is the empowerment of women and girls across the world, aligning with critical elements of the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) iamtheCODE is a unique movement of direct action to improve economic outcomes for women and girls, as well as a direct implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Methodology

iamtheCode will provide a comprehensive approach that integrates within the ecosystem of organisations working to empower young girls in Africa. The movement aims to reach more than 1 million girls by 2030, training and mentoring thousands of girls per year. We will mobilise undergraduate students, and bring marginalised girls into existing technology hubs where they can learn how to code with our technology partners.

We will also offer them leadership training through our mentoring program.

iamtheCode has the methodology and resources to create the impact on vulnerable communities. The overall success of iamtheCODE will be measured through numbers of girls who learned how to code, young women empowered, and job opportunities created in 2030.

The aim

The Fourth Industrial Revolution is creating demand for millions of new jobs, with vast new opportunities for fulfilling people’s potential and aspirations.  The aim of iamtheCODE is to support women and girls discover their own identity and fingerprint through learning how to code, creative learning and cracking problems through STEAMD (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics and Design).

We will provide them with necessary resources and tools to become world class digital leaders.

What are the Sustainable Development Goals?

The Sustainable Development Goals are the blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all. They address the global challenges we face, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace and justice. Learn more and take action.

17 Goals for People, for Planet, Prosperity, Peace and Partnership

The Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and improve the lives and prospects of everyone, everywhere. The 17 Goals were adopted by all UN Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which set out a 15-year plan to achieve the Goals.

Today, progress is being made in many places, but, overall, action to meet the Goals is not yet advancing at the speed or scale required. 2020 needs to usher in a decade of ambitious action to deliver the Goals by 2030.
