Prototype

You are a true designer, you found a problem that is affecting a specific group of people. You defined the problem and then thought of a ton of solutions to address the problem, now we move on to the next phase. Creating a prototype.

PROTOTYPE: Transform your ideas into a physical form so that you can experience and interact with them and, in the process, learn and develop more empathy.

This can be a difficult step because from all your ideas you need to pick one to address your problem. It is important when you think of designing your prototype it is a solution you think will address the problem the best way possible in a unique way.

In our example of girls missing school, you may decide the best option is inform parents on why girls should be in school. You decide to speak on the radio to inform as many parents as possible over a series of speaking events. Now, you need to design what the radio program will be, what you will say, when it will air, and what radio station to broadcast from.

There can be a lot of things you have to think of when designing a prototype and that is fine! The more details the better.

Now it’s your turn:

Think back to your original problem and all the solutions you ideated earlier. Which solution would you want to make a prototype for? Why this solution? In your notebook define the solution as much as you can and provide details for the prototype.
